Val Schub was born in 1992 and raised in Orange County, California. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from The University of Southern California in 2014. As a working artist and recent student in Los Angeles, Val has developed many interests and influences that have shaped her body of work. Working primarily with sculptures and paintings, Val depicts her interpretation of duality among daily life, through abject subject matter. Her interest in the grotesque and socially unaccepted matter coincides to display work that is abrasive and bold. By incorporating the figure, or remnants of the implied figure, Val’s work possesses a powerful connection of familiarity within the viewer. She uses deformed facial expressions and disjointed limbs to display moments of complete chaos and inner turmoil. Forcing viewers to observe objects, as well as images that are not usually enjoyable to encounter, she is doing her job as an artist by placing them upon a pedestal for all to re-examine.
